Project Overview
The team at Propulsion worked with Sharper Image to create a white noise machine. The Challenge: A noise machine that uses air movement—no speakers or complex circuitry—to generate a variety of tones and volumes.
Through prototyping, the team tested different ways to manipulate fan-driven air to produce soothing sounds, ultimately crafting a sleek, calming device that fits perfectly on a nightstand.
Sound Design Process
The team started by exploring several key factors: the type of fan, its direction, speed, and placement, along with the size, density, and positioning of the vents relative to the fan. To refine the design, we created rapid prototypes with interchangeable parts, allowing us to test and compare sound performance, adjustability, ease of use, and the overall experience.
Prototyping
Through physical testing, we arrived at a final design featuring a ducted vent ring around the outer edge of the housing, close to the fan. This setup offers effective volume control while keeping the design visually subtle. The pitch control vents are positioned within the center of the night-light ring and are adjusted using a smooth sliding baffle. This mechanism lets users easily reveal or conceal the central vents, both functionally and visually.
Intuitive Control
The result is a thoughtfully designed device that’s as calming to the eyes as it is to the ears. Its smooth, subtle contours complement other bedside items, while the built-in light offers a warm, ambient glow to help you unwind. The adjustable white-noise can be controlled by:
Pitch: The machine’s pitch can be adjusted by sliding the inner core, which controls airflow through the top vents.
Volume: To adjust the volume, simply rotate the outer housing to fine-tune the airflow through the bottom vents.
Night Light
The result is a thoughtfully designed device that’s as calming to the eyes as it is to the ears. Its smooth, subtle contours complement other bedside items, while the built-in light offers a warm, ambient glow to help you unwind. The adjustable white noise effectively masks background sounds like traffic or HVAC noise, creating a peaceful environment for uninterrupted sleep.
