I led the industrial design of this whole-home water filtration system that embodies a seamless blend of functionality and appliance-like elegance, tailored for modern households.

Its streamlined form not only complements contemporary home aesthetics but also prioritizes ease of use with intuitive access points for maintenance and filter replacement.

Engineered to deliver high-performance water filtration, the system incorporates a modular layout, ensuring adaptability to various installation spaces while enhancing serviceability. Every detail, from the placement of components to the ergonomics of removable panels, was thoughtfully designed to offer a user-friendly experience without compromising durability or efficiency.

Project Launch

The project began working closely with Pentair’s engineers and a team of experienced plumbers to thoroughly evaluate and down-select the internal components that would make up the final system. Our process included rigorous testing and assessment of key elements such as pre-filters for sediment removal, port filters for fine filtration, remineralizers to enhance water quality, and a 4040 membrane for advanced purification. Additionally, we incorporated precision sensors for monitoring system performance and a robust pump to ensure consistent water flow and pressure.

Configurations Explored

As the Industrial Design Lead, I developed multiple configurations for the whole-home filtration unit in close collaboration with the engineering team to ensure alignment with plumbing and water flow requirements.

While engineering prioritized technical performance, I advocated for user-centered design, ensuring that the favored configurations addressed key factors such as serviceability, maintenance ease (e.g., filter replacement), and overall user experience.

Volume Studies were created out of black foam-core to visualize the unit’s size and test for human factors. We paid close attention to the accessibility of compartments and removable panels for intuitive access and usability.

First Prototype

The first prototype was instrumental in understanding how the system's components would come together and ensuring sufficient spacing for plumbing lines. Constructed primarily from 8040 aluminum extrusions for the frame, 3D-printed joiners for connections.

By assembling this early model, we validated spatial requirements, identified potential conflicts between components, and refined the layout to ensure both functionality and serviceability in the final design.

Appliance-Like Design

The design of the whole-home filtration system drew inspiration from modern home appliances, featuring a sleek, minimal, and sophisticated aesthetic that also conveys its advanced technical capabilities. Unlike traditional systems on the market, this unit needed to visually differentiate itself, reflecting its unique, salt-free filtration technology.

Visual Brand Language

By adopting clean lines, premium materials, and a contemporary form, the design balances elegance with a subtle nod to its high-performance engineering. This approach not only allows the unit to integrate seamlessly into the home but also helps it stand out in a crowded marketplace as an innovative and forward-thinking solution.
